STORIA
Although historical records are imprecise, Haworth is believed to take its name from Haworth, England, a Hamlet made famous by the Bronte Sisters. The first European settlers were not English, but Dutch farmers who carved out arable field from thick forests. The rural tranquility of the area remains undisturbed with its tutor-style homes and its ancient trees towering to commanding heights. Haworth is a beautiful single-family community.
Education
The Haworth Public Schools serves public school students in kindergarten through eighth grade at Haworth Public School. As of the 2017–18 school year, the district, comprising one school, had an enrollment of 428 students and 40.9 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 10.5:1. Public school students in ninth through twelfth grades attend Northern Valley Regional High School at Demarest in Demarest, which serves students from Closter, Demarest and Haworth. The high school is part of the Northern Valley Regional High School District, which also serves students from Harrington Park, Northvale, Norwood and Old Tappan at Northern Valley Regional High School at Old Tappan. During the 1994-96 school years, Northern Valley Regional High School at Demarest was awarded the Blue Ribbon School Award of Excellence by the United States Department of Education. As of the 2017–18 school year, the high school had an enrollment of 1,018 students and 91.6 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 11.1:1
Transportation
NJ Transit bus routes 167 and 177 serve the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan in New York City, and the 186 serves the George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal in Washington Heights, Upper Manhattan. Rockland Coaches provides service on the 14ET route to the Port Authority Bus Terminal and on the 14K route to the George Washington Bridge Bus Station.
